hey hey! you guys are life savors, i tell everyone about your site, shity yahoo takes forever to attach everything, even a 500 kb graphic. you guys should strike a deal with them. like, do all thier attaching. i dont know, its just so painfully slow, you guys like charge them every file sent. youll bank man. callem up.

Tried your site and was unable to upload file got a cannot find server at 90%

James Lam said...

This is a reply to the post above.

The 'Cannot Find Server' usually suggests that your internet connection has dropped before the whole file could be uploaded. Perhaps you are on a shared connection, and others are 'hogging' the bandwidth.

Please try uploading a smaller file, just as a test.

If you still experience problems or indeed, you send a file successfully, do get in touch again.

Anonymous said...

looks like a nice alternative to yousendit but upload speed is painful. I'm crawling at about 12k/sec up but I consistantly get 70-80k up on other sites.

Anonymous said...

I tried a head-to-head contest between MBF and YSI, sending a 2MB file simultaneously.

MBF was quicker by almost a minute.

I guess this is just down to the server load at any one time.

At least there is a progress bar with MBF. Nice feature!

This is really really cool!!!

Works great. Saves a lot of time and email hassle. Can use it to transfer big graphic files like scanned document tifs.

How do I retrieve my attached file that I recieved through mailbigfile please?

Thanks,

Mark

James Lam said...

To retrieve a file sent though mailbigfile, just click on the link contained in the email which gets sent to the receipient.

I'm trying now with a 750 MB file... so far so good. I was just wondering, what's the benefit for you ? Why is it free ? What do you get from this ?

.:J3SS3:. said...

Didn't worked for me at all. I uploaded a huge 718 MB zip file and received a link to a 628 MB zip file. Clicked on it and once on my desktop... 0 MB zip file. Tried it 3 times, now it says that the file is no longer available for download. Really disapointed :(

MailBigFile is better than Yousendit simply because it shows indicators/statistics on your upload status and remaining time which I think is awesome. I am now going to use MailBigFile all the time.

One enhancement that I would request is an instant download link generation. Some sites already do that. That way, you can send the link via IM and the other person can start the download right away without involving the email thing.

Great job.

Tim Woodruff said...

Hey, this is Tim Woodruff with Paradise RV. Love your site - we use it exclusively for sending pictures to our customers. (I'm the tech guy here)
I was wondering what are the chances of having a embershipor suscription thing so we can upload all of our files and send people links to them at will rather than having to upload it once again each time we want to resend the same file. Also, a link generator would be great so I can send it through IM or give it to tinyurl to send to someone. Also, being able to send it to multiple recipients at once would be great. I'm not sure if your form for email works this way already, but we could seperate emails with commas to send to multiple recips. Anyway, i love the service, but it could still be better. Obviously that takes time and work, so you guys could charge for certain services! have the basic be free, and have a premium or platinum membership for a monthly fee, or something like that. :-)

very handy tool. faster than yousendit, and the progress bar is very nice. thank you-

I wanted to send an album of pictures, but couldn't find a way to send the whole album. Is there a way other than one picture at a time? Thanks.

James Lam said...

In response to the comment above, you could zip them first.

On a Mac: right click on a folder, then select "Create Archive".

On Windows: right click on a folder, then select "Send To -> Compressed (Zip) Folder".

This looks like a GREAT site. However, people over 50 yrs old (like me) or those with less-than-perfect eyes will have a hard time reading the small print on the other (non-main) pages. Could you please make your print larger (at least 14-point) and with a bit more contrast (not the grey on white)? It won't cost you any more and a LOT more people will be more comfortable with it.

Bottom line: your site will be more usable.

Thanks,
David who's over 50.

I am trying to sent a power point presentation via your web site. I cannot get it to work. Is it because the presentation is in a folder with files within the folder. In other words, I need to send the entire folder with all the files within the folder. Is this possible

Anonymous said...

I just tested it and it works like a charm. Can you send to multiple e-mail addresses?

Will Tims said...

Just today found your service through www.Komando.com, it looks great but I'm confused about the statement below. Does this mean I only have 3 free downloads?

* Files sent through Mail Big File will be available for up to 7 days, or a maximum of 3 downloads.

Best regards,
Will Tims

James Lam said...

Hi David, thank you for your comments. We will look at implementing the changes today.

Anonymous said...

Do you have a written privacy policy other than your quick note that you won't sell e-mail addresses or send spam?

James Lam said...

Janey,

Thanks for your enquiry.
I suggest you 'zip' the folder in question before sending it, as you will be unable to send a regular folder.

For instructions, please see the comment I left at 3.07pm (GMT) above.

James Lam said...

A few people have been asking about sending to multiple email addresses.

This is not currently an option, due to the possibility that the service may be abused and used to send Spam.

If you wish allow multiple people access to files, you should check out "Doc Monster". This is our web based Digital Asset Management software.

For more info, please go to http://www.docmonster.co.uk

Our privacy policy for MailBigFile can be viewed by clicking the 'Terms of Service' Link in the footer.

James Lam said...

This is a reply to Will Tims.

A file will remain on our servers for either 7 days from the time it was uploaded, or until it has been downloaded 3 times.

If you require a service which will allow you to upload numerous files to a single repository, which will remain there in definately - check out Doc Monster.

Doc Monster is our Digtal Asset Management software.

It is web-based, so you can access your files from anywhere. It also allows multiple users to have access to the files.

Please check out www.docmonster.co.uk for more details. and a free trial.

Hope this information was useful.

Question: I am in the process of upgrading to a new pc, which will be delivered next week. I have about 2 GB of mp3 songs which I downloaded well before the uproar of file sharing erupted. I have long since stopped. I would like to transfer the songs to my new hard-drive, however, ahead nero and ez cd creator is not working to burn them as data files. Burning them as audio files would take a really long time. Most of the files run 3-4 Mgs each. Do you think it would work to upload them to this site, and then download them to my new pc? Obviously this would be lots of smaller files - I don't know if I can only upload one file at a time, of if I can do more. Do you know if I could put them into a winzip file without losing anything? This has been very frustrating to say the least. Thanks...

Just learned about this site through Kim Komando's site of the day column.
Decided to try it by sending a file to myself.
Strangely, an error message said that my e-mail address was in error or wrong, anyway it wasn't accepted as a legitimate address.
Does MailBigFile work on Mac OS X 10.4.5 or is this for PCs only?

Anonymous said...

this anonymous gets nothing happening after doing the three steps, gotta to be missing something someplace, somehow.
File was a music file of 69.4 mb.

mgdartist said...

nice idea, but if it cant resume after "cannot find server" or the like, we're better off with bt or icq shared files, which do.

thanks anyway

Mac OS X compatibility:
Yes, MailBigFile is compatible with Mac OS X: in fact it was developed on this operating system!

Excellent site. Thanks to both you and Kim Komando for sharing! Works Great!!!

Does an uploaded file stay on your server very long after the first recipient downloads it? If so, can that same file be sent to a second and third recipient directly instead of going through a sebsequent upload? Thanks much.

HEY I LOVE YOU WEB PAGE !

I get a lot of complaints about sending big photo files.
It seems I either have to send a crappy low rez photo
or wait until I can send a CD. The only problem I have is
I never see a progress indicator to let me know just how long it will take.
I'm using a Compaq Presario 8000T-CTO Windows XP SP2.
IE6 & Firefox 1.5.

This is a response to JimL's comment.

You have several options here!

1) Copy all the files you want moved, into a new folder o your desktop.
Now, instead of using some aritrary burning program, simply open my computer, and drag the entire folder into your primary disk drive! If the folder is too large to fit within one disk, you'll have to "split" it into an "archive". To do this, you'll need WinZip. It's a free download from www.winzip.com.
Right-click the folder on your desktop with all our files in it, and open the WinZip context menu by hovering your moue over WinZip. In the menu that pops up, click Add to zip file. Select the name for the file, and click add. (For a saller file, select maximum from the compression drop-down list, where it says normal)
Once it's finished compressing everything, you'll see a zip folder open in Winzip. Just o to trhe actions menu, and click "split...".
Choose the name for your file, and make the part size 650-700 megs for a CD. Now simply drag and drop each part separately into the disk drive in My Computer, and burn each one individually, by (after dragging the file into the drive, thus creating a virtual image of the file) openning the drive, with a blank disk in it, and clicking (from the top-left) "Write these files to CD". That will burn it just fine without a CD burning program.

Your other option is to do the same process, except split the file into 1 gb sections, and upload them to mailbigfile.com. :-) Please let me know if you need any more help, I'd be happy to remote admin the whole process for you.

every e-mail address i put in it says your address seems to be invalid!! whats up with that?
MAC

Anonymous said...

Tried it a few times, it wouldn't let me attach a file of .jpg's, only the individual pictures. So I then zipped the file and it let me attach that. But it's been 20 minutes and the 14.4MB file hasn't shown up at it's destination or notified me that it's been sent. I did try to put two email addresses in (separated by commas) maybe this messed it up.

Anonymous said...

Well, this is fine; however, two additions would help:

1. In the notice to the sender, it would be helpful to have the link to the download included.

2. I am unable to send to more than one person; therefore, it requires uploading twice, as I, the sender, did not get a link to forward.

Is there a way to send to more than one address?

i am having the same problem as several people it seems. i tried to send a small file to myself and it said my e-mail address is not valid. same result with most of the other recipients i tried. this appears to be a great concept but it doesn't help if it keeps rejecting the recipient's e-mail address.

I started uploading a 281.7 mb file 3.5 hours ago it is 12.32 am, I stayed up to see it through even though I have to get up for work in the am and at 99% complete 280.2 mb uploaded I received this error: Internal Server Error
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Please contact the server administrator, info@mailbigfile.com and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

I did nothing to cause this error and I am not a very happy camper, Kim Komando needs to hear about this one.

Unhappy Camper -> Happy Camper?

Sorry to hear of your bad experience. Have you tried sending the file a second time?

Have you had any luck sending any files through MBF?

There have been thousands of files successfully uploaded through our service. This seems extremely unfortunate that your first visit to the site has not produced the results you expected.

Please accept our appologies, and do let us know how you get on before you completely write us off.

To Robert in LA,

You could always send the file to yourself, and then just forward the receipient email to 3 other addresses.

However, please could I point you in the direction of DocMonster, our Digital Asset Management software.

This can upload multiple files, and allows users to login in and download them as many times as neccessary.

Check out www.docmonster.co.uk and sign up for a free trial!

CAN'T Read Email Reply with Text Based E-mail program. I was notified of file being sent to me over email, but could not read message language looked like Janpanese

For those of you who want to send to multiple email accounts, mail the upload to yourself first, and then forward it on to your list of recipients.

This is to another "anonymous" who was having trouble reading the email reply with a text based Email client.

Please could you give us some more detailed information so we can track this down.

e.g. what email client/version you are using, operating system etc.

help - i can receive the file, but the pop-up blocker won't let me open it. i've allowed the website, changed to the lowest security level, and i still can't get past the pop-up blocker - help, please...

Please could you give me more details about the internet security software you are using on your PC (assuming you're running Windows XP?)

Anonymous said...

oops, sorry, James - yes, win xp, w/their pop-up blocker.

James Lam said...

We don't fully understand your problem.

mailbigfile doesn't use any pop up windows.

For further info on the IE pop blocker, check out this

Link

In particular, look at the "allow sites" options.

Anonymous said...

James, I've already allowed the site. I've never had a problem like this before. And I'm not saying BigMailFile uses a popup - it's just when I open the email w/the link for the file that was emailed, I can't get to anywhere. That's when I get the tone and the quick line display that a popup was blocked - when I try to open the link for my file.

James Lam said...

Your privacy policy contains the following:

Your Email Address
We will NOT sell your email address or send you any spam.

It doesn't say anything about recipients' email addresses and I'm not really happy about using the service until I have some assurance that my recipints' privacy is also respected...

Hello I must say this is a very nice blog you have here and the comments are very interesting as well. Being an internet afficionado I am constantly seeking out new sources of information like this one. While I am currently doing some research, I would also like to intimate the readers of this blog about the ongoing drive to sell out the internet to the big communications companies. I am part of a pressure group that would appreciate it if readers would help spread the word about this so we can maintain the intergrity of the internet as a free resource for the world. Thanks for helping to spread the word and being a resource for my work. Cheers and keep up the good work.

To send multiple files at once either stuff them with dropstuff, (Free to Mac users),Zip them,(Mac or PC).
Then just upload the compressed file. This is just great for sending bigolfiles......
